Ecoconscious Valentine's Day

How to share the love, without damaging the planet

So, it's Valentine’s Day again and love is in the air! So how do we show our loved ones just how much we care for them, while also loving our beautiful planet?

To help you solve this dilemma, here are a few things to avoid and ideas for some ecoconscious love!

AVOID:

  • Cards with glitter and plastic

  • Floral bouquets from flower farms that use huge amounts of water, chemicals and invariably come wrapped in plastic.

  • Throwaway hearts, balloons and bows that end up in landfills

IDEAS:

Here are some eco friendly ideas to help you show your love, whilst also being kind to the planet:

  • Look for local, organic or fair trade chocolates. There is a good article here from Living Lightly Ireland (https://livinglightlyinireland.com/2021/01/29/sustainable-ethical-chocolate/) on ethical and Irish made chocolate and also here from the Ethical Consumer (https://www.ethicalconsumer.org/food-drink/shopping-guide/ethical-chocolate)

  • Make a card or give cards that bloom into beautiful wildflowers, such as these from Reuzi (https://reuzi.ie/collections/greeting-cards) or the Paper Shop (https://www.thepapershop.ie)

  • Choose plants instead of floral bouquets

  • Share the love and give a donation to a cause close to your loved one’s heart – e.g. Dog’s Trust, etc.

  • Try out a new local or vegetarian restaurant or avoid the crowds and buy some organic, locally sourced food and have a romantic “farm to plate” dinner for two at home.

  • If you are buying a gift for your loved one, maybe try out a new ethical brand, locally produced gifts, a voucher for a local company, etc.

So I hope that gave you some ideas and I wish you lots of love and a very Happy Valentine’s Day!
