Some tips to keep in mind if you are entertaining this Christmas:
Tip 1 – Try to avoid food waste
We usually tend to overestimate how much people will drink and eat. However, there are lots of tools available to help you to estimate the quantities of food you will need (e.g. www.savethefood.com).
Tip 2 – Provide vegetarian options
This will reduce the amount of meat you are using. For example, hummus, tzatziki, olives and cheese are all good options and healthier too!
Tip 3 – Avoid single use plastic
For example, consider using cloth napkins instead of paper ones and avoid paper plates, plastic cutlery, etc. Provide a chalk marker so everyone can put their name on their wine glass – especially good during Covid times!
Tip 4 – A more ecofriendly Christmas Table Setting
For your Christmas table use foraged foliage to decorate and consider skipping on the Christmas crackers or making your own. Choose or make crackers that you can fill yourself or look for recyclable versions. Fill them with something that’s actually useful or is personal – it will be a much more rewarding experience.
Alternatively create a personalised gift to leave in each person’s place if you think it will be acceptable to your family. If you explain this to your children in advance and get them involved it might just work!
You can also buy or make reusable Christmas crackers which are an eco-friendly way to embellish your Christmas dinner table.
